About Gil[]
George Jefferson’s chief business rival was Gil Cunningham with whom George had a considerably antagonistic relationship; perhaps the two were actually a sort of "frenemies" as the two rival cleaning busniess owners also competed at play just as bitterly as they did in their professions, both fielding bowling teams which competed against each other regularly, as they met in the annual bowling tournament which they both competed in in the "Alley Oops" episode.
Later in the series. in the Season 11 episode "That Blasted Cunningham", after Cunningham has died of a heart attack; the Jeffersons discover that Gil never really desired to be enemies with George. as it's revealed that Gil's wife, Mrs. Cunningham (played by future L.A. Law star Susan Ruttan), had been the motor behind this competition between the two all along. In his will, Gil left George the bowling trophy he won vs. Jefferson Cleaners in that years annual bowling tournament in which their teams competed against each other, with a letter taped to the bottom of the trophy warning George to never trust her because she really was the one who "put the "cunning’ in Cunningham!”
