Synopsis[]

Florence meets her new boyfriend, Buzz Thatcher in church, and she brings him home to meet George and Louise. While getting to know Buzz, Louise becomes suspicious of his intentions, because of his extremely strict, fundamentalist Christian attitudes.

Storyline[]

Florence's new boyfriend, Buzz Thatcher is an extremely strict, fundamentalist Christian she meets in church. He's a mailman who attends church 7 days a week, and knows practically the entire Bible by memory. He only watches Christian TV shows and movies, only listens to Christian music, and he doesn't drink, smoke, swear, and dance.

Florence brings Buzz home to meet George and Louise, and they're shocked by his extreme Christian beliefs, and they talk in the privacy of their kitchen about it. Louise tells George: "He's not normal!" George answers that neither is Florence. When they return to their living room, Buzz and Florence announce that they've decided to get married. Louise asks Florence if she's sure about her decision, while becoming more suspicious of Buzz's true intentions.

The Jeffersons and their friends decide to throw an engagement party for them. Helen and Tom Willis' gift is their very own Bible from Tom's Publishing House. Florence corrects Buzz about a mistake he made with a Bible quote, and he tells her that she should know better than to correct him in front of other people, because a wife's duty is to honor her husband.

Harry Bentley's gift is a Hindu needlepoint picture, and Buzz accuses Hindus of disrespecting Christianity. Afterward, Florence tells Buzz that she can get a job to help him save money to buy a house, but he tells her that he doesn't want his wife to work, and that her place is in the home.

Louise's gift is a white, sexy nightgown, which offends Buzz, and he yells: "Put the damn thing back in the box!" He then apologizes to everyone for his blasphemy. When Florence questions Buzz, he answers that "only a sinner would wear such a thing." George tells him that Louise has one just like it, and Harry tells him that he bought one for a lady friend.

Louise tries to explain what she meant, but Buzz accuses her of meaning to "corrupt" Florence, and he calls her "a sinful woman." George calls Buzz a chump, and Florence pushes him back into his chair and defends Louise: "This woman is a saint! Look who she married!" George jumps up from his chair and stands next to Louise. Buzz tells Florence that he thought she was "a decent Christian," and when he tried to talk about words in the scriptures, Florence told him off: "That's your problem, Buzz! You know all the words, you just don't know what they mean!" Buzz decides to leave, and he yells: "The engagement is off!" Florence answers: "Hot damn!" and Buzz leaves. Florence then tells everyone that she guessed the only thing she was in love with was the idea of getting married. Everyone still decides to celebrate, and the party goes on.
