Buzz Thatcher was a character who appeared in the Season 7 episode of The Jeffersons titled "Florence Meets Mr. Right" (episode #20). The part of Buzz is played in the episode by late former television newscaster/reporter and actor Larry McCormick.
About Buzz[]
Buzz Thatcher is an extremely strict fundamentalist Christian who works as a mailman. He attends church 7 days a week, and he only watches Christian TV shows and Christian movies, and he only listens Christian music. He doesn't dance, smoke, drink or swear, and he knows the entire Bible by memory.
Florence met Buzz in church and they started dating, and she brings Buzz to the Jeffersons' home so they can meet him. When George offers him a drink, he tells him and Florence that: "Lips that touch wine will never touch mine." In the kitchen, Louise talks to George about Buzz's behaviors and attitudes and says he's not normal, and George answers that neither is Florence.
Florence and Buzz announce that they've decided to get married, but Louise doesn't think Florence is sure about her decision and becomes suspicious of Buzz's intentions.
The Jeffersons and their friends decide to throw an engagement party, and Buzz's overly-fanatical Christian attitudes cause them grief after opening their presents. Tom presents his gift of a Bible from his publishing house. Buzz gets annoyed when Florence corrects him in front of others for making a mistake on a Bible verse, saying that a wife's duty is to honor her husband. He also wants Florence to quit her job because "a wife's place is in the home." When Harry presents his gift of a Hindu picture, he believes that Hindus are disrespectful towards Christianity and he insults them by saying they're doomed to burn in Hell. Louise then presents Florence with her gift of a white, sexy nightgown and Buzz yells at Florence: "Put the damn thing back in the box!"
Afterward, Buzz apologizes for his blasphemy. When Florence questions him, he answers that only a sinner would wear such a thing. George answers that Louise has one just like it and Harry says he bought one for a lady friend. When Louise tries to explain herself, Buzz accuses Louise of trying to "corrupt" Florence and calls her "a sinful woman". George defends Louise by jumping up from his chair and calling Buzz a chump, but Florence pushes George back into his chair. Florence then yells at Buzz and defends Louise by calling her a saint for marrying George. Buzz thinks he made a mistake thinking that Florence was "a decent Christian" and when he mentions the scriptures, Florence answers: "That's your problem, Buzz. You know all the words, you just don't know what they mean." Buzz responds by calling off the engagement and leaving the Jeffersons' home.
